Have you ever walked away from a HireVue interview with that uneasy, uncertain feeling in your gut—only to later get the dreaded rejection email? You’re not alone. I’ve been there. I failed my first HireVue interview. In my case, I did not even receive any feedback from the Hiring manager. So I really took it up on myself to try and analyze what could have gone wrong so no one else makes such mistakes and is well prepared.

In this post, I’ll explain what HireVue actually is, give you a behind-the-scenes look at how it works, break down common mistakes (including mine), and share actionable tips to help you nail your next digital interview.
What Is HireVue?
HireVue is a digital interviewing platform used by many companies to streamline early-stage hiring. It could be just one of the rounds in the interview process after the HR round. Instead of speaking to an interviewer in real-time, you’ll respond to pre-recorded video questions, and in many cases, your answers may be analyzed by artificial intelligence (AI) before a human even sees them.
HireVue interviews are all about:
- On-demand video interviews you can complete on your own schedule
- AI evaluation based on communication, keywords, and nonverbal cues(in some cases)
- Standardized questions for consistency and fairness across candidates
It sounds simple, but the truth is that many people fail these interviews—often without knowing why. 😦
How does the HireVue Q&A work?
HireVue isn’t just about turning on your webcam and chatting. It’s a structured, timed Q & A process.
1. Invitation and Setup
- You’ll receive an email invitation to complete your HireVue interview.
- You can use a computer, tablet, or smartphone.
- Interviews must be completed by a certain deadline – generally preferred as soon as possible(prepare and give it the next day), some links may have an expiry date.
2. Interview Format
- Usually includes 5–8 video questions.
- You get 30 seconds to prepare and up to 3 minutes to respond.
- Some companies allow retakes (typically one or two tries per question), but once submitted, answers can’t be edited.
3. Types of Questions
- Questions are behavioral or situational in nature:
- “Tell me about yourself.”
- “Describe a time you worked in a team.”
- “How would you handle a difficult customer?”
- There could be technical questions. Here’s a sample for an EDI product manager interview in the Supply Chain space:
- ” Which EDI specification fields would you ask the new supplier to provide?”
- Somewhat technical and situational: ” What will you do if one of the suppliers is not adhering to the standard?”
- Some interviews include game-based assessments/pattern assessments to evaluate cognitive skills.
4. Practice Tools
- Scrap through the internet (Youtube etc.), and you will find a lot of practice/informational videos.
- Ask your recruiter for more information on the type of questions asked.
- You’ll have access to one sample question before starting the real interview.
- Practicing helps you get used to the timing, camera setup, and question style.
Evaluation & Analysis
AI-Driven Assessment
- Voice clarity, confidence, tone, and use of keywords
- Eye contact, facial expressions, and body language
- Alignment with job-specific competencies
Human Review: Many employers still have recruiters review your responses alongside AI-generated scores.
Why I Failed My HireVue Interview?
Here’s what went wrong during my first experience—and what could go wrong for you too.
1. I Didn’t Prepare Like It Was a “Real” Interview
I assumed I could improvise. Over-confidence. Big mistake. I was unorganized and unpolished. Treat it like an in-person interview. Prepare answers, research the company, and rehearse. This round can be a make or break in the interview process.
2. My Communication Wasn’t Sharp
Without a live person, I rambled and lost focus. My responses lacked structure. There is a 30 second prep time after you see any questions. Take that time to write down some points. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to stay concise and relevant. Nerves led me to misinterpret some prompts, and I answered vaguely. Read or listen to each question twice. Take a breath before you respond. I saw this in a tip on the web that one should repeat the question asked, but now in retrospect, I feel that was a mistake. AI may also misinterpret the responses: Speak clearly, use keywords from the job posting, and eliminate filler words.
3. My Body Language Was Off
I avoided eye contact with the camera, didn’t smile, and slouched. Nervous maybe? Take time to practice looking in the webcam(and not yourself) and recording videos. Treat the camera as the interviewer. Look directly at the webcam, sit up straight, and maintain an approachable demeanor.
Tips for Success
Whether it’s your first or fifth HireVue interview, these tips can help you shine:
- Look at the camera to simulate eye contact
- Speak clearly and confidently—avoid “um” and “like”, and use the question prep time wisely
- Use keywords from the job description
- Practice answers using the STAR format, practice recording yourself and check it later for review
- Keep positive body language: smile, sit tall, and stay focused
- Dress as you would for a real interview—head to toe! Treat it like an important round.
The HireVue Q&A process may feel robotic or intimidating, but it’s really just another interview format—with its own rules and quirks. If you prepare strategically, practice your responses, and present yourself clearly, you’ll increase your chances dramatically.
I failed my first HireVue. But I learned from it—and you can too. Every attempt is one step closer to landing the job you want. Have you attended a HireVue interview? Share your experience with us in the comment section!
