20s = Anxiety and Unnecesary Worrying! Not for all people though, but if you are remotely like my 20 something old self, you have one or most of the following traits. You are an over thinker and massive procrastinator. You get worried about every small thing that doesn’t go your way. You think way too much about what others will think of you. In short, you are living way too much in your head and need rescue from your constant panicking. If there were just 5 things that I would tell my 20 year old self to stop that constant brain chatter, these would be the ones :

1. Invest. Invest. Invest.

I can’t stress on this one more. I wish someone would have told this to me earlier. Ok! We get it – money is not everything but it does make your like more comfortable. Start investing with your first salary. Choose the safer stocks if you are risk averse like Index funds. If you just leave your money untouched, for a long term, you are bound to see the magic of compounding(which is also the secret behind Warren Buffet’s wealth). Looking for a standard of how much of your income you should be investing per month? Follow the 70-20-10 rule. Put 70% in your living expenses, 20% in saving and invest the remaining 10%. Also, invest in yourself. Take certifications, courses, pick up some skills that will increase your professional profile’s value.

2. Most things won’t matter in the next 5 years.

If you are unhappy about something – it is always good to just feel those emotions, don’t suppress them. But then, think about this – would any of it matter in the next 5 years. To put things into perspective, how many of your friends that you spent most of your time 5 years back are you in touch with? How many such moments when you felt your life is over, say few years back, really matter now? You survived them all! What really matters is your journey through all of those ups and downs that shape your personality. If something is bothering you, just think about whether it would really matter after 5 years?

3. Change is constant.

Nothing is permanent. Right after you had the most amazing time of your life, you may be back down to the ground due to something else. That’s just life! And, why should it be a long run with no hiccups? What’s the fun in that. The heartbreak that you just had – is not permanent, let it heal with time. The job that you just got rejected for or the exam that you just flunked – is just another one of life’s test – this too shall pass. Things will change, they are bound to. So why fret over the small things. If you are in the middle of chaos, trust me – stick on and it gets beautiful as you come out on the other side – you always will, because that the law – change is inevitable. So, the easiest way to steer through most difficult situation is to just “go with the flow”.

4. One best friend vs 10k virtual followers.

We are social animals. Our ancestors, over centuries, have been social hunter-gatherers, who survived adversities together as a group – bonded by a faith and sense of community. Studies have shown a staggering 73% of Gen Z feel lonely sometimes or always (Source). Yes, social media gives you a temporary dopamine rush and instant gratification, but costs much more than you think. We all need human interaction. It’s always better to have that one best buddy rather than 10K superficial social media followers.

5. Health is wealth, quite literally.

Unfortunately, many people do not give importance to self care, mental and physical wellness. Healthcare can be a money drainer. These habits will be an investment in yourself. Take up a sport or some sort of exercise. Move. No need to build 6 pack abs, just basic movement to stay fit! Hydrate. Eat good food. Again, not diets. Just basic intentional eating. Sleep at least 7-8 hours a day. Have some sort of wind down routine for a good night sleep – which includes not being on your phone, while falling asleep. Take a walk in the nature. Relax. You will be much more happier and save yourself some good amount of money in the process (which otherwise would go paying the $$$ medical bills).
